Chapter 5 Extensions to Type - 1 Fuzzy Logic : Type - 2 Fuzzy Logic and Uncertainty

Recently there has been significant growth in research interest in type-2 fuzzy logic. Type-2 fuzzy logic is extension of type-1 (regular) fuzzy logic where the membership grade in a fuzzy set is itself measured as a fuzzy number. Much of this growth has only been concerned with type-2 interval fuzzy systems, a subset of type-2 fuzzy systems, where the membership grade of a fuzzy set is given as an interval set. Type-2 interval fuzzy logic has proven to be successful in some applications but it is our view that it is a compromise and that (generalized) type-2 fuzzy sets have a great deal to offer. To demonstrate this, we begin by discussing works of philosophy that relate to fuzzy logic. It is clear from these works that type-2 fuzzy logic should have a role to play in modeling uncertainty. The next Section in this paper explores some of the philosophical discussion of vagueness, Section III, presents the history of the field of type-2 fuzzy logic. Section IV discusses future research directions for type-2 fuzzy logic and Section V draws conclusions from this work.
